Midfoot Pain at Foot Foundation
The midfoot forms the central arch of the foot and consists of the navicular, cuboid, and three cuneiform bones, which connect to the forefoot via the Lisfranc joint complex. It plays a crucial role in stability, load transfer, and propulsion.
Because of its central position, the midfoot is vulnerable to both traumatic injury (e.g. Lisfranc injury) and degenerative changes (arthritis), as well as overuse syndromes from repetitive loading.
At Foot Foundation, we provide specialist diagnosis and treatment for midfoot pain, addressing both acute injuries and chronic conditions through advanced assessment, orthotic therapy, rehabilitation, and when necessary, referral for imaging or surgery.
Common Leg Conditions
Midfoot Arthritis – degeneration of the tarsometatarsal (TMT) joints causing pain, stiffness, and swelling
Lisfranc Injury – sprain, fracture, or dislocation of the Lisfranc joint complex, often from trauma or sporting injury
Overuse Syndromes – stress reactions, tendon overload (tibialis posterior, peroneals), or joint irritation from repetitive loading
Foot structure – flat feet, high arches, or hypermobility increasing midfoot strain
Systemic conditions – inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid, psoriatic, gout)
Our Approach
At Foot Foundation, we use:
Detailed biomechanical and gait analysis to identify underlying causes
Custom orthotics and footwear modification to stabilise and offload the midfoot
Shockwave therapy for associated tendon/soft tissue pain
Exercise and rehabilitation programs to strengthen supporting muscles and restore stability
Manual therapy & mobilisation to maintain joint function
Referral for imaging and orthopaedic management if fractures, severe arthritis, or Lisfranc injuries are suspected
Treatment is available at all Foot Foundation clinics: Rosedale, Takapuna, Remuera, Botany, Hamilton, and Tauranga.
